In an impressive old French mansion, Pathana Boupha carries antique statuary, jewellery, silverwork, Royal Lao government currency and old photos, mostly from the Lao owners’ private collection. It also sells high-quality textiles from various ethnic groups. The late patriarch designed many of the costumes and ornaments used in the former Royal Palace.

The lady who runs the shop has lived in the house - her grandfather's - all her life, and has known all the luminaries of the recent and not-so-recent past. Her personal photo collection, her antiques and bric-a-brac, not to mention the remarkable French colonial building itself, made this by far our best shopping experience in all Laos. We bought a sublime-sounding gong and a frog-drum; we carried the (large) gong home on the plane to Sydney, and the drum arrived there the day we did. Get her talking...
