The choice of accommodation in Luang Prabang is bewildering, with hundreds of existing options and a new guesthouse opening on average every 18 days. You’ll generally pay a hefty premium for any address northeast of the palace. Compact, pretty and generally good value Ban Hoxieng is a delightful little network of formerly residential lanes tucked behind the main post office, with a great concentration of good value yet relatively central choices. A selection of budget and lower midrange places south of Phu Si are generally less atmospheric but there’s a knot of good bars nearby. Bigger hotels, some aimed at package tours and Thai/Chinese groups, are mostly further south, notably along Th Phu Vao. Few are special enough to warrant the out-of-centre location.
