Introducing Bokonbayevo
There doesn’t seem to be much going on in sleepy Bokonbayevo. Community-Based Tourism’s promotional booklet describes it as ‘much overlooked’ and at first it’s easy to see why but scratch below the surface and you’ll find a bustling Kyrgyz community worthy of closer inspection. Spend an afternoon wandering the streets and meeting the locals – we were invited to take alarmingly graphic photos of a sheep being slaughtered then butchered with a kitchen knife; it wasn’t pretty.

Most of the town’s activity is centred along Bolot Mambetov where the local minibuses and shared taxis arrive and depart from. There is a string of shops, a small bazaar, a smaller police office, CBT and a mosque all within this block. If you are not eating at your homestay, the café 100m from CBT serves up a fine laghman (40som) along with other Kyrgyz staples.
