Banks are evenly distributed throughout the city. Moneychangers can offer slightly better rates than banks (and usually charge lower commissions); try some of the side streets that run from Safat Sq. Travellers cheques can be changed at the following places:

Al-Ghanim Travel (2nd fl, Salhiya Commercial Centre; 8am-1pm & 4-7pm Sat-Thu) American Express (Amex) is found here and card holders can cash personal cheques, but the office will not hold mail for Amex clients.
