Culture Shock Ratings

The culture shock rating considers the level of development in the location, the area's infrastructure and how easy it is to access services. It also takes into consideration how different the food and customs are and whether English is widely spoken. While generalisations are always tricky, here’s a summary of the ratings:

Rating 1

This is the least confronting of Intrepid's product range. English is the native language and the food, customs and access to services will be familiar to you.

Rating 2

You will probably have experienced food like this in restaurants back home and English is commonly spoken. Services are available most of the time but there may be some cultural differences.

Rating 3

Expect some culture shock. You will be exposed to signs of poverty and access to services may be sporadic. The food will be quite different to home and English speakers harder to find. Respecting the local culture will make it easier to fit in and really experience the location.

Rating 4

The comforts of home are more of a rarity. English is not common and the food will be quite different to what you are used to. It is important to observe some of the local customs to not cause offence. Many of the locals' standard of living may be confronting.

Rating 5

You're really out there! You'll need to pay specific attention to health and hygiene. A large proportion of locals' living conditions are a world away from standards you are used to. You may have difficulty finding an English speaker and there is little or no access to services. Paying heed to local customs is essential.

Description

Walk through dramatic landscapes rich in colourful birdlife and lush vegetation on this Mt Kenya trekking adventure. Watch the terrain change from towering bamboo to lush forest then to steep volcanic ridges. Camp overnight in the wilderness and listen out for calls of monkeys and birds - an African catch-cry like no other. A pre-dawn trek to view a spectacular sunrise from the top of Mt Kenya is the perfect crescendo to this Active journey filled with memorable moments and stunning scenery.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Nairobi/Mt Kenya

Leave behind the bustle of Nairobi and travel through scenic farmlands to the foothills of Mt Kenya. Hike to a local Kikuyu village and learn about the people who carve out a living on these mountain slopes. Visit the dark depths of the Mau Mau Caves on a guided walking tour and discover forest foods, herbal medicines and survival techniques. Look out for cheeky monkeys skylarking in the treetops.

Day 3 Giant Bamboo Camp

Hear the calls of colourful birds while walking through towering bamboo en route to Giant Bamboo camp. Try to spot majestic elephants or lazy buffaloes grazing.

Day 4 Highland Castle

Be challenged by steep terrain while trekking through forests of cedar on the way to the high altitude rainforest known as the Hygenia-Hypercium Zone. Camp close to the dramatic lava cliffs of the 'Highland Castle' and fall asleep to the sounds of the forest.

Day 5 Shipton's Camp

Hike towards Mt Kenya's summit and enjoy stunning views of volcanic peaks and glaciers. Arrive at the remote Shipton's Camp and soak up beautiful mountain vistas.

Day 6 Hall Tarns

Rise before dawn and ascend the final slope by torchlight. Watch the golden sunrise from the summit of Mt Kenya before heading to Hall Tarns for a well-deserved break.

Days 7-8 Meru/Nairobi

Take in views of waterfalls, tarns and lava flows in Gorges Valley on the gentle descent along the mountain ridge. In the evening, be rewarded with some creature comforts and a celebratory meal. Rise early for a final hike before returning to bustling Nairobi.
