It's the night before Independence Day here in Almaty, and I haven't been able to find any information on the festivities - if there will be any, that is: the receptionist at the hostel where I'm staying knows nothing about any planned celebrations. Does anybody else have any information?
I've been told a new museum (history museum? maybe replacing current Regional Museum) is set to open in Shymkent, maybe today, but I haven't been able to confirm that or its whereabouts. Anybody know?
Anyone know the transportation possibilities and costs from the Uzbekistan border (near Tashkent) to Shymkent?
Also appreciate currency exchange information (rates for dollars, recommended bank or street exchange, etc?)
(Forgive me if this info is already posted; I didn't see anything current and I'm in need pretty quickly.)
Anything else anyone wants to add about the place will also be appreciated. Thanks.
Currently working in Bishkek and need to do a border run and fly back in. Almaty obviously cheapest but as I have 2 week off for Xmas was thinking of making a trip out of it.
My thought was to jump the train from Bishkek deep into Kazakhstan, maybe up to near the Aral sea. Then make my way back to Almaty over 10days - 2 weeks.
I'm curious about the weather. All my Kyrgyz colleagues tell me nothing but horror stories and greatly advise me against going. But realistically how bad is it?…
I have read that due to recent changes, holders of certain passports (mine is UK) can now travel visa free and on arrival at land borders into Kazakhstan for 15 days. This is great, but the general consensus is that 15 days isnt enough time to see alot of Kazakhstan. Would it be possible to do a Thailand style visa run to a neighbouring state (lets say Kyrgyzstan as its visa restrictions are now the most relaxed in the area) after 15 days, hop across the border, then hop straight back into…
I'm interested in taking a taxi from Almaty to Bishkek this week; I have limited time and I understand they are faster than the buses and minibuses.
Can anyone give me an idea of the cost of taking a taxi; either for one seat in a shared taxi or to rent the entire taxi? Do the taxis go all the way into the center of Bishkek or do they only go to the border?
I have read that I can get a taxi to Bishkek outside Sairan bus station, is that right?
I plan to leave Pavlodar in a few weeks time for China and would like to use this northern crossing. I can catch a train to Semey but have no information about public transport through Georgiyevka, and Zaysan to the border. Does anyone know if there's a bus, buses, marshrutkas that ply this route? I assume that once in China transport will be plentiful. Thanks
