Message for U.S. Citizens:
Recently Implemented Travel Restrictions
in the Almaty Region
July 13, 2015
According to recent legislation, most of the popular tourist areas in Kazakhstan – Medeu, Shymbulak, Big Almaty Lake, Charyn Canyon, Alakol Lake, Monakhov Gorge, and other locations within 25 kilometers of a border – now fall in so called “closed” zones.
In order for non-Kazakhstani citizens to legally visit any of these tourist sites, it is necessary to send a request to the Head of the Almaty…
I'm a single female traveller looking for a buddy to share transport from Almaty, with a stop over at Charyn Canyon, and onwards to Karkara border entering Kyrgyzstan.
My travel date is 5 September 2015 Saturday.
My plan is to reach Karakol, Kyrgyzstan by the evening. If you would also like to share the Kyrgyz leg of the trip with me, do let me know!
I have done almost everything I can to get to Baikonur and this is the third time in a row I have been unsuccessful in trying to get a permit so I'm going to just go out into the desert and see what I can see. Is anyone going as well? I am sure no non-CIS tourists were given permits this time around so there might be a few.
Would really love some advice about how to do it. I have a train ticket to Baikonur but perhaps I cannot even get off the train if I don't have a permit.
I'm looking at a flight from Bishkek to Tashkent via Almaty -- the first leg (Bishkek-Almaty) is on Astana Air, the second (Almaty-Tashkent) is on Uzbek Airlines, with a two hour layover in Almaty. Kazakhstan is now visa-free for US passport holders such as myself. Astana Air advises that I "should" be able to check my luggage in at Bishkek and have it go all the way through to Tashkent, per an agreement between the two airlines, but that it's ultimately up to the person at the Astana Air desk…
I'm currently trying to buy a train ticket from Astana to Chu (train that goes to Almaty).
the kazakh railways website doesn't accept foreign credit cards so I tried the russian railways website.
the problem is the price seems to be MUCH higher on the russian system (70 USD instead of 15 !!!). yes, I chose the exact same train and seats. I checked other destinations (in Russia, not Kazakhstan) and prices are perfectly normal. is there any additional "tax" for Kazakh tickets bought on the…
In two days I will be leaving for a Central Asia trip and I have a few days to spend around Almaty. I would really like to visit Altyn Emel and the Kolsai lakes and was wondering whether it is possible to book guided tours from Almaty for not too much money. Does anyone have any information / recommendations about this?
does anyone know if I can go straight from Astana to Bishkek without passing through Almaty ?
can I stop in Shu and easily find transport to Bishkek (either bus or shared taxi, nothing too expensive).
thanks a lot in advance for your advice on this !
I have arrived in Almaty today and will be staying for four nights. I will be leaving the country on the start of the fifth day. Do I need to register at all? I arrived via a land border so this was not done automatically.
Anyone with a similar experience?
I'll be in Almaty beginning of July and I'd love to do a trip east to do some hiking in the gorgeous national parks Altyn Emel and Charyn Canyon (and maybe Kolsai Lakes). I've got an offer from Stantours for a 5-day-camping-trip with a guide.
Wanna join me? Or maybe you have another suggestion?
