I plan to leave Pavlodar in a few weeks time for China and would like to use this northern crossing. I can catch a train to Semey but have no information about public transport through Georgiyevka, and Zaysan to the border. Does anyone know if there's a bus, buses, marshrutkas that ply this route? I assume that once in China transport will be plentiful. Thanks

As of early September 2014 the border is firmly opened. Opening hours on both sides are from 09.00h to 18.00h.
Here is the story crossing from the south to the north:
Took 13.30h marshrutka (150 som) from Karakol's Ak-Tilek Bazzar's SE side towards Char-Kuduk. Got off at junction and trekked to the border (about 5-6km). As the marshrutka was quite slow we reached the border after it was closed at 18.00h. You can camp by the border or hire a bed at the 'stationary train carriage' there. You…
We are looking for people to join in a tour to the UNESCO world heritage petroglyphs at Tamgaly (not Tamgaly Tas), a day trip from Almaty, on 16 September.
There are around 5000 stone carvings, some of them 4000 years old and quite unusual: stone age art with people whose heads are sun discs, or people in disguise hunting bulls, and so on.
There is room for (at least) two more people, which would bring the price to 60-80 USD per person. Details here:
I will be travelling to Aralsk in the beginning of Sept, anyone wants to join?
I am talking between 5-10 Sept. Dates are flexible. It would be good to split costs of the trips while being there...Trip to ship graveyard near Zhalanash (4-5 hours) - 15 000 kzt (4WD), ship graveyard and the sea - 20 000 KZT (4 WD).
Some tourists also visit World Bank project site Kokaral dyke- Aklak spillway-Kambash lakeshore ( 8-9 hours).
Let me know!
I am looking for like-minded backpackers to join me. Depending on the number of people it can be done either independently (bus, shared taxi, hitching) or forming a tour group.
This is a beautiful route usually only possible during the season. What is more the Shepherd's Festival (end of August, near Char-Kuduk in Kyrgyzstan) is just around the corner. Will make a stop at Charyn Canyon on the way from Almaty to Kegen.
I should make it to Almaty by 27 Aug. Send me a PM if you are…
I read a couple of years ago about a European/Kazah couple who host backpackers in probably the outskirt of Almaty. I couldn't find the post any longer. Would be grateful if anyone can direct me to/furnish the info!!
I have gotten hold of a copy of LP Central Asia 2007 edition. I wonder if the ground transport options have changed (bus, train, or taxi/minibus/bus section by section)? How much are they now? How frequent? How long it takes?
What about the costs of short flight between the two cities.
Is it recommended to do a loop by using two different land border crossings?
Thank you in advance!!
