hey, i am planning on making a trip to Kazakhstan in a week or so, and planning to hire a horse and explore the east [Altai], have tried looking up horse rental prices but only really getting daily rates. i read somewhere that you can get a horse for 1000tenge or sometimes for free from small village, but still unsure whether thats for a day of a week, and whether that is true or not. can i rent a horse and go solo in the mountains or is that impossible? im super tight on money but i really…
Does anyone know the location(s) of the National Bank in Astana, where I can get paper currency notes for a collection? I'm trying to get brand new, unculirculated bank notes (one each) of the current issue for the collection. I'd also like to get the previous issue of the notes if possible. I tried for notes in Almaty, but could only get two.
Trip Report (recently completed) from my 2010 trip from Dagestan to Altai.
Starting in the wilderness of northern Dagestan, I drive north into Kalmykia with its striking Buddhist, Mongolian culture. Then to the cosmopolitan town of Astrakhan and further up the Volga to Volgograd (Stalingrad) and the monument complex of Mamayev Kurgan, a breathtaking piece of Soviet cult-architecture.
It's the night before Independence Day here in Almaty, and I haven't been able to find any information on the festivities - if there will be any, that is: the receptionist at the hostel where I'm staying knows nothing about any planned celebrations. Does anybody else have any information?
Anyone know the transportation possibilities and costs from the Uzbekistan border (near Tashkent) to Shymkent?
Also appreciate currency exchange information (rates for dollars, recommended bank or street exchange, etc?)
(Forgive me if this info is already posted; I didn't see anything current and I'm in need pretty quickly.)
Anything else anyone wants to add about the place will also be appreciated. Thanks.
I'm curious about the weather. All my Kyrgyz colleagues tell me nothing but horror stories and greatly advise me against going. But realistically how bad is it?…
