The combined Almaty City History Museum & Museum of Repression was closed for renovations at the time of writing but is well worth checking on. The Repression Museum goes into haunting detail about the fate of thousands who earned Stalin's ire.

    too bad it's not there anymore

    runtintin does not recommend this,

    Live near the neighborhood, went to look for it, found the building - it's right across the park!! - but sadly, no museum. Talked to a nice lady in the building and apparently, it's now used as an art gallery - and as of this writing (OCT 2011) the ground floor has art classes for kids and a gallery displaying their work. As to where the museum went..nobody knows.
