Lonely Planet review for Hiroshima-jō
Also known as Carp Castle, Hiroshima-jō was originally constructed in 1589, but much of it was dismantled following the Meiji Restoration, leaving only the donjon, main gates and turrets. The remainder was totally destroyed by the A-bomb and rebuilt in modern reinforced concrete in 1958.

Great for the first-timer
dammat89 recommends this,
I loved the look of this Japanese castle (admittedly, it and Osaka Castle are the only two I've seen). To my untrained eye, the reconstruction looks authentic, and the castle grounds are pleasant and uncrowded. After reading the guidebook I had very low expectations for the interior, but I was pleasantly surprised. I found the historic information (from memory, a lot but not all was in English) about the castle and city fascinating, and enjoyed seeing the different robes (some could be tried on), katana, etc. Perhaps I wouldn't have appreciated this museum so much if I'd been to others for comparison.
