Every year, many visitors to Japan purchase a JR Pass without researching it properly, and end up wasting a large amount of money. Every week, visitors to the Thorntree post questions about the JR Pass, many of which have been answered on here before.
If you are thinking about purchasing a JR Pass for your trip to Japan, please read through this FAQ before buying it or posting a question on the Thorntree:
I'm going to be traveling to Japan for 3 weeks this summer--after hitting the major tourist cities for the first 2 weeks, I'd like to spend the last week doing more outdoors activities/being in less urban areas. Looking for recommendations in the south, southeast or southwest....will be coming from Hiroshima and have to end up in Oaska.
Was thinking about spending the last week in Kyushu and want recommendations on what areas to visit. Is it worth the cost and effort to go to Yakushima? (I am…
Wondering if anyone can help me out/give some suggestions. I am going to Japan for a month in 3 weeks time, and am wondering what the situation is with SIM cards over there, i.e will I be able to buy a pay as you go type SIM with texts, calls and data? And will I be able to put a Japanese SIM into my (unlocked) iPhone 5S bought in the UK?
If this is not feasible, could anyone suggest alternatives?
Thanks in advance!
I've been doing a lot of research on Japan Guide and I have several guidebooks. Very illuminating sources but really all it's done is add to the list of places I want to see.
I have a month, maybe a little more. I am either flying into Tokyo or Osaka and the latter is the cheapest option.
I love food, nature, culture. I tend to enjoy slow travel, and I think the below itinerary is a bit fast paced for me but doable. I'm not a big manga geek, but I am a studio Ghibli fan. I'd really, really…
We have several free nights between Hiroshima and Osaka in October which I would like to spend somewhere along the Seto Inland Sea. I am considering either Onomichi or Okayama as a base. I have read that parts of the west coast are heavily industrialized, especially around Fukuyama, but in the same articles they describe close by Onomichi, Tomonoura and the islands in the inland sea as being beautiful, charming, etc. That seems inconsistent with heavily industrialized. Can anyone shed light…
I just want to get started on booking at least my hotels so, after leaving Tokyo would a good start be to go to the Kiso Valley and then on to maybe Matsumoto, and then Takeyama and Kanazawa (maybe more) - we would then want to spend about 4 nights in Kyoto and after that - am still thinking - but do fancy the idea of the inland sea; all this will be plumped out (we have 21 nights in Japan, our first 4 nights being in Tokyo (we fly out of Tokyo)) - we fancy gorgeous scenery…

I am heading to Japan soon and I just found out that they ask if you have had an criminal charges on your boarder entry card. Apparently they may not let you in and I can't get a straight answer form the embassy. As serious as the DUI was, (I am not discounting this at all), I need to hear of other peoples experiences. Have you entered with a prior DUI charge? Did you tick the yes box on the boarder entry card? Do they know all your past history at immigration? Thanks for your…
Just returned from an interesting China visa trip to Osaka. First, the Chinese Consulate does not process visa applications for China at the Chinese Consulate building. The China Visa Application Service Center is located on the 9th floor of the Ore Hommachi South Building. Entry door is located behind the Kinida Pharmacy/Beauty shop which is directly opposite the Burger King situated in the middle of the pedestrian road of Shinsaibashi-suji. Subway stop C16 on the Chuo Line and make your…
