Hey,

My partner and I are spending 2.5 weeks in Japan in February 2017.

We will be doing Tokyo - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Miyajima Island - Osaka - Tokyo

We have been looking at the JR rail pass which you have to purchase outside of Japan. In AUD it's $600! Each!

Spending $1,200 on train tickets is kind of daunting. Has anyone purchased this and can justify the price to me?! Please haha.

I have looked up what each train will cost and it seems to be around $400 anyway each. That's not including…

We are travelling to Japan for 14 days in last week of September, first week of October. This is our first time in Japan. Usually, we would book accommodation a few nights before and have a relaxed itinerary. However we are thinking of booking 4 nights in Kyoto at the beginnning of our trip, and 4 nights in Tokyo, and then using the other nights to stay at Hiroshima, Takayama, Kanazawa and Hakone. Our questions are this:

  1. Do you think we will be able to book accomodatiom in…

Hello,
We are planning to visit this beautiful country in last week of October. We are in very initial phase of planning, so any suggestion would be appreciated.
We will have 10 days to spend there and we can travel by train + car (wherever we need to access remote areas, like Iya Valley and Shikoku) and if needed, by ferry too.
Flying in/out Tokyo is $150/person less than flying in/out from Osaka, but we are yet to book flight.
I think, our plan will be carried out by our interest and time of…

Hi all,

I’m hoping that if I put up our 3 wk itinerary for our honeymoon to Japan for this October, some provide suggestions around it. We’ve already got our Japan Rail Pass and we have all our hotels booked (except for Kyoto, where we are using an Air BnB).

Tokyo: We fly in to Narita airport on Sunday evening and we stay in Tokyo until following Friday. In Tokyo, a couple of things we plan to do:
Go to Shibuya crossing and the shops, perhaps in Akihabra, Harajuka and Takeshita-dori.
Go on…

Hi,

Does anyone know of any good online (English language) resources for checking out what's going on in the Kansai region of Japan? I'm interested in special museum exhibitions, concerts, events, festivals, all that kind of stuff. I don't know if there's any handy website that has a lot of information on that kind of thing in English?

I'd like to know what's going on in the whole of the Kansai region really, and certainly the main cities - Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nara.

Also - anything on at the…

So I've heard that, rather unexpectedly, some of the peninsulas in the south of Wakayama Prefecture, as well as on Shikoku, are meant to have coral. That sounds rather exciting! I have a decent snorkel, and am considering trying to take a trip to one of these places in order to try out some snorkeling in Japan.

Does anyone know anything about this? Where is it likely to be easiest and most interesting to snorkel? I have low expectations; I know it's not going to be the Bandas. But seeing coral…

So far the plan goes:
Dec 27-30: Tokyo with a day trip to Nikko
Dec 30-31: Nagano and Shibu Onsen
Jan 1: Visit a shrine? Any recommendations of where to go/stay?
Jan 2: Possibly Takayama or Tsumago?
Jan 3-5: Kyoto with a (day?)trip to Nara
Jan 6-7: Back to Tokyo, visit Himeji on the way back

Any recommendations to fill in days or things to add/change? What are some things you would do?

OK, I have no connection with this guy, except I owe him a great big thank you if we ever meet.

If you're a foodie and/or a Japan otaku like myself, I highly recommend a book that came out late last year by Matt Goulding, titled "Rice, noodle, fish: Deep travels through Japan's food culture." It is very well written, informative, entertaining and thoroughly covers a fair range of Japan's extraordinary food scene. The definitive volume, IMO. Warning, though, you're liable to end up with an…

Dear All
I will be having 2 weeks holidays in Japan and would like to spend the second half in Kyoto. The date should be around 1-7 Oct. Yet it is exactly when the National Day "Golden Week" of China. I wonder if there would be flocks of Chinese roaming around Kyoto during the period and I should avoid it.
Thank you.

Good evening,

I am looking for information on how best to do a 3 day section of this trek. I'm finding it hard to find the following info and hope someone can advise me;

  1. Do you have to book with an tour operator and book ahead and can you just turn up and do parts of this trek independently and make your own bookings. Was hoping to be able to park the van somewhere and do a some treking and for a few days or so then get a bus back to where we parked up.

I have read some information…
