Child shopping in Tokyo

  1. A

    Hakuhinkan

This layer cake of a ‘toy park’ is crammed with this year’s models of character toys, the hottest squawking video games, seas of colourful plastic, the softest plush toys ever invented, even a model racetrack (¥200 per five minutes, plus ¥100 car rental) on the 4th floor. If you arrive after hours, a few dozen top-selling toys are available from vending machines outside the store.

  2. Nichōme Sanbanchi

Lovers of toy nostalgia should make a bee-line for this crammed little shop named after a classic TV show. Wares include snow globes, models, anime action figures and character goods inspired by Sesame Street to Barbapapa, Teletubbies to Disney. It’s the essence of kawaii, though not always the essence of cheap pricing.

  3. B

    Kayodo Hobby Lobby

This is a collector's plastic dream - heroic, sexy figurines from all walks of Japanese science fiction. Look for the Neon Genesis Evangelion statues outside.
