Tokyo has thousands of places to sleep, and not all of them will cost you an arm and a leg. In fact, Tokyo has a surprising number of places that cater to budget travellers – without skimping on service or style. Among these are some cool little boutique hotels, slick business hotels, funky guesthouses and atmospheric old ryokan (Japanese traditional inns). This being Japan, the rooms are likely to be smaller than you’re used to (pack light!). But on the other hand, this being Japan, even budget digs have stellar, helpful service. Shibuya, Shinjuku or Roppongi, neighbourhoods on the west side of town, make convenient bases and are supremely located for taking advantage of Tokyo’s excellent nightlife. For something quieter, look to the old-fashioned inns in and around Ueno, a neighbourhood in Tokyo’s more traditional east side.
