  1. Yokohama Minato Mirai 21 aerial panorama

    Blog: Muza-chan's Gate to Japan - 25 April 2012

A great travel destination, Minato Mirai 21 from Yokohama should be one of the must see Japanese places… And not only because here you can visit the tallest building from Japan, the spectacular the Yokohama Landmark Tower, but also because it’s a place of great beauty and an excellent example of a perfect modern urban development.

  2. High-speed Jet Ferry and a Travel Tip

    Blog: Muza-chan's Gate to Japan - 10 November 2011

The cruises on Sumida River and in Tokyo Bay, with yakatabune (old-style Japanese houseboats), regular ships or with the futuristic Himiko are a well known attraction in Tokyo. A little less known is the fact that from Tokyo and Yokohama you can enjoy a longer cruise towards Izu Ōshima, the largest (and closest) of the Izu Islands, a group of volcanic islands administered by Tokyo.

  3. Japan places, Yokohama skyline

    Blog: Muza-chan's Gate to Japan - 15 July 2011

One of my favorite places for evening (and romantic) walks is the Minato Mirai area from Yokohama. The first reason is that it is a prefect place even during summer, because the temperatures are lower than in Tokyo - the average high in July is 28°C and in August 30°C. In the evening when I took this photo, the wind was blowing from the ocean so, after a hot summer day, it was a little chilly…

  4. A Japan Photo per Day - Suica Mascot and a Travel Tip

    Blog: Muza-chan's Gate to Japan - 3 July 2011

One of the most often seen Japanese mascots is the Suica mascot, a cute penguin designed by a well known artist, Sakazaki Chiharu. Suica 「スイカ」 means “watermelon” in Japanese, but is actually an acronym for Super Urban Intelligent Card and, like the name says, it is a RFID smart card that was launched by the East Japan Railway Company in November 2001.

  5. A Japan Photo per Day - Minato Mirai 21, Travel Tip

    Blog: Muza-chan's Gate to Japan - 30 May 2011

At the end of the Edo period, Yokohama was a small fishermen’s village, with just 100 inhabitants… Now there are 3.6 million people living in Yokohama, and it is the second biggest city in Japan.

  6. A Japan Photo per Day - Koban, Travel Tip

    Blog: Muza-chan's Gate to Japan - 22 February 2011

What to do when you get lost in Tokyo? If you’re a tourist in Japan, it is often advised that if you need directions, just go to a police station, a kōban 「交番」. It’s a good advice, but… because the kōban architecture varies greatly (I don’t think I’ve seen two alike), sometimes it can be difficult for a tourist to identify them… Usually, a kōban is a small two storied building, marked with KOBAN signs (Roman characters) and with a golden star, the Japanese Police logo.

  7. A Japan Photo per Day - Pachinko Parlor

    Blog: Muza-chan's Gate to Japan - 24 November 2010

They can be seen everywhere in Japan, almost as often as the convenience stores. Brightly lit in vivid colors, covered with ads featuring anime characters (Evangelion seems to be a popular choice)… and when the doors are opening, a deafening noise comes from inside! Yes, you guessed right, I’m talking about Pachinko parlors: Click on photo for higher resolution:

  8. A Japan Photo per Day - Hikawa Maru

    Blog: Muza-chan's Gate to Japan - 17 November 2010

In Yokohama, near Yamashita Park, you can visit one of the most famous Japanese passenger ships, the Hikawa Maru. Named after the Hikawa Shrine from Omiya (Saitama), Hikawa Maru was built in 1929 and it was a luxury passenger ship (nicknamed “Queen of the Pacific") until the World War II, when it was converted to a hospital ship. Although it suffered some damage, in the end it was the only Japanese passenger liner to survive the war. It was recently restored (in 2008) and now is opened to the public as a museum.
