Hobson’s
A deliciously convenient landmark/meeting place at Nishi-Azabu Crossing, Hobson’s is originally from Santa Barbara, California, but has been here since 1985. Familiar ice-cream and frozen-yoghurt flavours still tempt, alongside Japanese tastes like yuzu (citron), sweet potato and mikan (mandarin orange). Try a ‘blend-in’, where fruit, cookies and such (¥50 each) are added using what looks like a giant drill.

Imo-no-kichikan
Famous for soft-serve sweet-potato ice cream (¥295). Look for the giant plastic cone with lavender-hued ice cream.

Kita-no-aisukurīmu Yasan
Housed in a converted warehouse along the canal (look for the ice-cream banner), this legendary Otaru ice-cream parlour scoops up some seriously stomach-turning flavours. If you're up to the challenge, you can sample nattō (fermented soy beans), tofu, crab, sea urchin, beer and even a jet-black scoop of squid ink.
