Me and my partner plan to be in Hokkaido in May between 10th and 17th. We are looking for 2 or 3 locations from where we can do day hikes, returning to accommodation at night and then moving to the next location two or so days later. We are looking for spectacular beauty. We will have a car the whole time we are on Hokkaido. I am getting confused by all the options so some good advice from the experienced would be appreciated. We are both reasonably fit. Please mention likely…
Thank you so much for all your comments in the last post - it gave me to confidence needed to take the jump and plan my trip! Since its last minute I need to book things ASAP! I have been researching things like crazy and I have come up with an itinerary:
- fly in to Tokyo
- go to Kanazawa
- Go to Kyoto
- Day trip Nara
- Day trip (or maybe 2 day trip? ) to Osaka
- train back to Tokyo for flight (I tried open Jaw from Osaka but did not work)
I will arrive April 13 in Tokyo, and leave…
I know similar questions have been asked on here before, but I would really appreciate your advice on the best/easiest way to travel this section of our trip in June this year. Also I would like to know where you suggest we stay for 1 or 2 nights to see this area of the J alps. I was told to stay in Kamikochi or Hirayu Onsen area, but I can't work out the public transport connections between these places. Also, due to a back problem, we can only stay in a hotel with Western style beds.…
Has anyone been to a Ryokan that they highly recommend for the price. eg in Kyoto???
Anyone been to Hiirigiya or Tawaraya or other better ones. They are so expensive and want to make sure worth it
I will be traveling in Japan between May 27th and June 9th. The schedule is quite packed, and I am trying to figure out which JR pass is most suitable.

Date From To
May-27 Narita Tokyo
May-30 Tokyo Hakone
May-31 Hakone Matsumoto
Jun-01 Matsumoto Takayama
Jun-02 Takayama Shirakawa-Go
Jun-02 Shirakawa-Go Takayama
Jun-03 Takayama Takoka
Jun-04 Takoka Miyajima
I'm sure many of the regulars will be aware of the generally very poor spoken English in Japan, particularly away from the main tourist centres. I don't know how many first timers/tourists to Japan realise how difficult it will be to communicate in English.
They may be interested in an article on the BBC News Website about it.
Here is one piece from that article that I found very revealing:
"Japan is 40th out of 48 countries on the Test of English…
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how I can find campgrounds in Japan. My trick at the moment is simply to scour Google Maps in the region I'm hoping to visit and hope that something looking like a campground appears; I then Google the name to try and get information on costs, opening times, phone numbers, and so on.
Surely there must be a better way? Are there any websites with listings for campgrounds in the country? I hope to do a lot of camping this summer, and having ready…
Hi All! :)
Im new to this forum and I was hoping to be able to use your wisdom :)
I'm planning a last minute trip to Japan (for mid April) and something I keep coming across is that "you cant plan a trip to Japan last minute" .... they dont say why just that its not possible. I have found tickets and hotels rooms roughly in my budget (not booked yet). So I would like to know WHY? Is there something I'm missing? Is it the lack of english? Am I being totally blindsided by something I dont know…
Hi fellow travelers!
I wonder if anyone could advise on the best possible transport connection between Nikko and Gunma Prefecure (preferably with destination at Minakami, from where I have a shot at reaching Takaragawa onsen)?
It seems that both Nikko and Gunma Prefecture are popular day/overnight destinations from Tokyo, but I find it hard to encounter any reports on combining these two sites in one trip.
Are there any direct train or bus connections? If not what are your suggestions?
Below there is my (I think) "definitive" itinerary for Japan for 22 nights and I would need your help in considering if it is worth buying a JR rail pass and, if yes, for how many days.
Tokyo - 3 nights
--> Japanese Alps where to spend 5 nights divided as follows:
a) from Tokyo to Magome for the Nakasendo trail heading to Tsumago
b) from Tsumago to Matsumoto
c) from Matsumoto to Takayama
d) from Takayama to Kanazawa
--> from Kanazawa to Kyoto (3 nights in Kyoto)
--> from Kyoto to Osaka (1 night…
