Northern Honshū

Lake sights in Northern Honshū

  1. Tazawa-ko

Public beaches surround the lake itself, yet swimming is a frigid proposition outside the balmy summer months. If you're not a member of the polar-bear club, you can rent all manner of boats in the town of Tazawa Kohan during the spring, summer and autumn months. A stroll by the lake at sunset is a treat at any time of year, and is the preferred activity for romance-seeking Japanese couples and bonding families. There is also a 20km perimeter road, which is perfect for a slow drive or a vigorous bike ride – rentals are available in Tazawa Kohan (¥400 per hour).
