from Shiroko (or Yokkaichi) to Kyoto?

Hi! Are there better connections from Shiroko (or Yokkaichi) to Kyoto than by train via Nagoya (which would mean a huge detour)? The bus companies seem to have only websites in Japanese that I don't know...

Thanks for any advice, Gaston

Tobita Shinchi - Osaka?

Tobita Shinchi is, as I'm hoping someone here knows, a red-light district in Osaka. Just to get it out of the way - no, I'm not here asking for advice on how to get service etc. I'm just writing an article on it, and I wanted to know whether anyone could clarify if Tobita Shinchi is Japan's LARGEST red-light district? I've checked the Wiki page, which says it's the largest in Western Japan. However, another source put that it's the largest in the whole of Japan. Strange question, I know. Any…

Studying Abroad in Japan (Complications)

I'm really interested in studying abroad in Japan over the summer, and I wanted input from anyone, especially black gay males who's been to Japan and how homosexual African-american men are received by the Japanese people. I'll either be going to Tokyo, Osaka or Nagoya. Also I'd like some info about our place in the university, gay bars/clubs, gay villages, otaku's, living their (I'm aware of the freezing problems in homes during the winter) and the workplace (hoping my options wont be limited…

Money in Japan

I went to Japan last year and I took cash with me but I can't remember if I took Yen or US dollars. I remember I had quite a lot of cash with me.
Coming from Australia, can anyone recommend whether I exchange say A$1000 into Yen and carry around in a money belt or take the same in US$ and then exchange in Japan. I also have two ANZ travel cards which I topped up with yen. I know the double transaction fees but I have a QANTAS cash card as well but not sure how it would work in Japan.

Any…

Snowboarding/Skiing Japan on a budget

Hello, I was hoping to do a couple of weeks skiing trip to Japan over the Christmas Holidays in late December early January.

I was looking around on the internet, however there is a huge amount of advertising but not much impartial information with basic facts about costs etc.
Where is the most affordable alpine destination in Japan including accommodation and equipment rental? What sort of price would I be looking at for say- 12 days of skiing?
I have heard that some places give a discount for…

Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka

Hello

We will be going to Japan for our honeymoon next April and are just trying to figure out how many days to spend in each city. We are 31 and 28 and are just as interested in relaxing and temples as we are in the business of Tokyo.

Our rough itinerary at the moment is:

April 26 to 30 - Tokyo
May 1 to 4 - Kyoto
May 5 to 8 - Osaka

Do you think we have spread our time well or should we spend longer/shorter in certain places?

Thank you
Susan

Need comments on my rough itinerary of 14-day trip in Kyoto/Nara/Tokyo

As stated in the subject, I'm planning for my travel itinerary before and after attending a conference in Nara. I've been to Kyoto and Nara before (during sakura season); so the focus is more on autumn foliage. However, I've never been to Tokyo or Mt Fuji region. Here's my itinerary,

Nov 28 (Fri)
- Flight arrives at Kansai Airport at 8:30am
- take Haruka train to Kyoto (will try to book a hotel within walking distance to Kyoto Station)
- afternoon: autumn foliage @ Kyoto:
(1) Tofukuji Temple…

Transportation in Tokyo

What is the best way to travel around Tokyo? I will arrive in Tokyo by train via Kyoto. I can use the JR pass within Tokyo or so I am told. But is the Metro or the JR line a better option to get around Tokyo?
