Canal City
Once-futuristic Canal City may be showing its age (it opened in 1996), but it still attracts crowds with its artificial canal with illuminated fountain symphony, hotels, multiplex cinema, playhouse, and about 250 boutiques, bars and bistros.

Kyū-Takatori-tei
Kyū-Takatori-tei is a fabulously restored house of a local trader, built in a mix of Japanese and Western styles with lantern-filled gardens, a Buddhist altar room, a wealth of paintings on cedar boards and an indoor Noh stage. An English audioguide rents for ¥300.

Former Hosokawa Gyōbutei
North of the castle, down paths of immaculately raked gravel, is the large villa and garden built for the Hosokawa clan. Inside are displays of furniture, lacquer and art pieces.
