Like the trendy Daimyo district it occupies, this renovated boutique hotel has it all - style, price, comfort and convenience. Dark wood furnishings and bookshelves give rooms a lived-in feel.

Until a few years ago, the Plaza Hotel Tenjin was a cookie-cutter business hotel. But like much of Fukuoka's Daimyo neighbourhood, it has been transformed into a swank, and affordable, destination. The striking entry mixes light and dark architectural touches along with a sampling of Zen garden decor. By the time you reach the front desk, you're in another world. Despite the modern lobby touches, the well-appointed rooms have a homey feel, with bookshelves, Internet hook-up and comfortable furniture. The hotel restaurant serves mostly traditional Japanese cuisine (reservations a must on weekends), while the atmospheric 3rd floor Bacchus bar mixes a serious cocktail.
