The first morning voice, light as a wing beat, spreads out through the long, still half-empty shotengai (shopping street), taking strength and speed from each and every person it bumps into, just like a crazy pachinko ball: butterfly effect.
It comes to your ear and carries you towards Dōtombori, where, in the evening, you will meet it again dressed up in new clothes: the shouts of the waiters who, waving astonishing flavored menus, draw potential customers to their izakaya; the mad noise of videogames whenever sliding doors open; the metallic sound of coins dropping in the vending machine in exchange for a ticket valid for a cup of hot ramen; the little, cartoon-like screams of high school girls in their uniforms; the crackling of fried oil ready for freshly griddled takoyaki (octopus balls); the tinkle of countless charms hung on colorful mobiles of even more colorful kogyaru...
In the city regarded as the friendliest and most lively in Japan, you could have your appetite satisfied just by sitting on a bench and enjoying this huge manga coming alive around you. But all those menus rich with succulent photos, the realistic plastic representations of food specialties, the funny slurping of people eating noodle soup, and the giant mechanical crab, being one of the symbol of this street, make you remember that Osaka is also the Japanese culinary city par excellence. And therefore, you close your eyes and let yourself be transported not more by the sounds, but by the smells: this evening will it be yakisoba, okonomiyaki, yakitori, yakiniku, shabu-shabu, onigiri or what else? Little importance. Everything is tasty, everything is cheap, and mainly, everything can make you feel an integral part of this incredible living show that is Dotombori street.
