Lonely Planet review for Museum of Kyoto
Housed in and behind the former Bank of Japan, a classic brick Meiji-period building, this museum is worth a visit for those with an interest in Kyoto's long history. The regular exhibits consist of models of ancient Kyoto, audiovisual presentations and a small gallery dedicated to the city's film industry.
On the 1st floor, the Roji Tempō is a reconstructed Edo-period merchant area showing 10 types of exterior lattice work. This section can be entered for free; some of the shops sell souvenirs and serve local dishes. The museum holds regular special exhibits, most of which have nothing to do with Kyoto (including a recent exhibit on the treasures of the Ottoman Empire); however, they are often excellent. Check Kansai Time Out or ask at the TIC for details on upcoming shows.
