Lonely Planet review for Ōzawa

Located on one of the most beautiful streets in Gion – Shirakawa-minami-dōri (also known as Shimbashi) – this charming little restaurant offers excellent tempura in refined Japanese surroundings. Unless you choose a private tatami room, you’ll sit at the counter and watch as the chef prepares each piece of tempura individually right before your eyes. Considering the location and the quality of the food, this place is great value. Ōzawa also has an English menu. The restaurant is across a bridge; look for the sign on the street.

    Disappointed with Ozawa

    jerry_merex does not recommend this,

We went to Ozawa on May 26, our last night in Kyoto and were very disappointed.
Although the restaurant bills itself as offering the tempura "that will complete your Japanese experience", in fact we felt that this was the poorest meal that we had in 6 days in Japan, despite being one of the most expensive. The service was ok but we were not satisfied with the food. The batter on the tempura was not fluffy, and in some cases it was burned.

Our other experience with Lonely Planet's endorsements in Japan and Kyoto has been good, and we wonder if management of this restaurant has changed or something since your review was written. We were seated in a tatami room, and we did not see the counter that was mentioned in the review. There is also a small shop in the front of the restaurant.

We would not recommend this restaurant to others.
