Lonely Planet review for Maika

If you ever wondered how you might look as a geisha, Kyoto has several shops that offer maiko-henshin (geisha transformation). Maika is a popular maiko-henshin shop in Gion. If you don't mind spending a bit extra, it's possible to head out in costume for a stroll through Gion (and be stared at like never before!). The process takes about an hour. Call to reserve at least one day in advance.

    A unique Maiko-experience in Kyoto.

    mnemosine recommends this,

It was a bit difficult to find it but you can recognize it immediately! Maika is in a traditional Gion wooden house and its three-floor structure is full of life and happiness.
Each phase has its own space: the kimono room, the make-up room, etc. Moreover, the personnel is very nice and skilled and can speak some English - Maika's staff is composed by girls and women only.
There are different fares - if you want to be dressed up as a maiko, without going out from Maika, you will spend approximately 6,500 JPY. Of course, if you want to look like a geisha and have a walk through Gion streets, you will have to pay more (at least 10,000 JPY) but it's worth it. The fare includes the make-up, the kimono and a picture of the geisha/maiko taken by a photographer.
Men do not have to wait for their girlfriends or wives to be dressed up, since they can wear the clothes of geisha's man.
Definitely recommended for everyone who loves everything that has to do with geisha and maiko.
