Lonely Planet review for Gokō-Yu

Gokō-yu, a popular bath, is another great spot to sample the joys of the sentō. It’s a large two-storey bath with a wide variety of tubs. There’s also a giant sauna with two rooms; one is merely hot, the other is incendiary! We also like the TV fish tank in the entrance (you’ll see what we mean). Note that Gokō-yu is a little hard to find – turn north off Gojō-dōri at the store that sells charcoal and gas burners.

    well worth a visit!

I had a different experience from Hilaire. I was quite nervous when I fronted up at this place a couple of weeks ago - I'd never been to a sento before and spoke no Japanese - but the girl at the counter gave me an English information sheet which explained everything. I made the mistake of hiring a 'small towel' (I'd have called it a small handtowel). In the pool area, I found a wide mix of age groups and a great variety of tubs.
The next night I went to another sento in the area (recommended by my guesthouse) which was much smaller and seemed to only be frequented by older, tattoed men. Very glad I went to Goko-Yu first!

    Basic, clean and works.

So, this is a place that would turn off first timers. Unless you are a bit hearty. Take soap, shampoo cause' they charge for it and even 10 yen for a hair dryer which didn't work. Baths are nice, one is i think, impregnated with soy sauce. Other bubblers and the like, not too hot but hit the right spot(s), watch out guys! Sign outside clearly visible from main st., about 50M. Saw 2 guys with TATOOS ! Yikes ! Yakuza?
