Lonely Planet review for Funaoka Onsen

Funaoka Onsen is our favourite sentō in Kyoto. This old bath boasts outdoor bathing and a sauna, as well as some museum-quality woodcarvings in the changing room (apparently carved during Japan’s invasion of Manchuria). To find it, head west from Horikawa-dōri along Kuramaguchi-dōri. It’s on the left, not far past the Lawson convenience store. Look for the large rocks out the front.

    An authentic local exprience"

I was amazed with my first sento experience in Japan at Funaoka Onsen. It can be a little bit weird to get naked in front of everybody first but as soon as you soak your bones in one of the tubs you forget about it. The outdoor bath is lovely with a really tiny garden. There's also a one-person tub where you get a stream of water on your back as a kind of "waterfall" which is simply amazing... As someone said you'll probably see mostly locals here (or maybe some lonely planet readers). If you are lucky (or unlucky) like I was, you might even spot a couple of Yakuza's and be able to appreciate their amazing tattoos (and feel a little bit scared of corse)!!

The review in the guidebook sounded intriguing enough to make me go searching for this bathhouse in the side streets of northern Kyoto, and it was worth it. This is a real local's place, and you may very well be the only non-resident there. It's segregated by sex like all public bathhouses here, so I can't speak for the men's area, but the women's side had five or six baths of different temperatures, plus a small outdoor section where you could sit in a steaming hot bath surrounded by rocks and trees and enjoy the cold air around you. The waiting area in the lobby has a crazy old drink machine but smells like decades of cigarette smoke.
