Tiny and cheerful, with veggie-inspired specials often paired with local sakes or shōchūs (distilled spirits). The sweet, energetic hostess proudly produces a well-thumbed Japanese-English dictionary and will pass it around for anyone to share - but plan on practicing your Japanese. Get off the tram at Uoichiba-dōri and continue for two blocks, looking on the right for the pastel yellow sign. If you reach the next tram stop you've gone too far.

    Fun having sake with the locals

    I've been to Hakodate twice in the past two years, and each time involves a trip to the Yasai Bar Miruya. Its always a laugh hanging with the locals, knocking back a few and butchering each others languages.
    If you speak a little japanese you'll have fun, if you don't you'll have fun, just be prepared to open the gate, i.e. you go first with the dictionary.
    The hostess has improved her English a little and now there is an English menu, I recommend the Sensational Chicken.
    If you are up for a little challenge and want to drink sake with the locals, check out the Yasai Bar.
