Abashiri Keimusho
Across the river from the old prison is this modern construction, a very real and very secure working prison home to just under 800 inmates. Given the notoriety of its precursor, the modern prison has become something of a tourist attraction, complete with a tiny museum and gift shop where crafts made by inmates can be purchased. It's also possible to walk around outside the prison walls, though further entry and photographs are prohibited.

Abashiri Kangoku Hakubutsukan
Housed in the remains of the original Meiji-era structure, this dark and foreboding museum details the reasons that this historic prison was so feared. Inmates braved brutally cold winters with thin bedding and virtually no warmth: one lone pipe ran the entire length of the corridors, providing the bare minimum of heat for cell-bound prisoners.
