Bar Ram
Kamakura has pockets of nightlife, including this hole in the wall in the lanes off Komachi-dōri. It's a tachinomiya (drink-while-standing bar) with plenty of old Rolling Stones vinyls and friendly banter. Look for the English sign.

Baobab
Tucked away on Ukishima-dōri, Baobab is an eccentric ode to Africa, with booths sculpted out of mock tree trunks, African wines and beer, and original cocktails (¥750) on offer.

Anbar Bar
The company of surreal feline imagery is an interesting companion to a fine, pensive whisky. There's an English sign outside, and plenty of hip weirdos inside.

500 Bar
Usually packed, even on weekdays, with a mix of foreign and local clientele, every drink on the menu here is ¥500, hence the name (pronounced 'gohyakubaa'). This is one of the franchise's several locations in Sapporo, right across the street from the Susukino subway station's Nanboku line.

Motown House 1 & 2
The crass may call it ‘ho town’, but on the pick-up front it’s no worse (or better?) than its neighbours, and since it expanded to two venues, it can actually be quite relaxed. Drinks start at ¥800. Funk, soul, R&B and hip-hop dominate here, of course.

Pig & Whistle
Like its sister branch in Kyoto, this is a good place to go for a pint and a plate of fish and chips. It's clearly marked from the street.
