It's just steps from Meieki, but a quiet aesthetic of clean lines and a European contemporary style prevails in this 115-room hotel. Calming beige fabrics pair nicely with cherrywood furniture, brass accents and glossy black bathroom tiles.

The Cypress was built in 1991 and is well set-up for business travellers, with a business centre and some rooms with high-speed Internet access. Rooms feature separate bathtubs and showers, and some rooms on the upper floors offer views of Nagoya Castle in the distance. If you can swing it, deluxe doubles offer more space and more interesting layouts. Look for frequent special rates. Whizz restaurant, in the basement, is a contemporary chic spot serving a seasonal menu of casual French cuisine, while the lobby lounge has a piano and classical music.
