Opera sights in Venice

  1. A

    Teatro La Fenice

Venice’s immortal ‘Phoenix’ opera house has risen twice from the ashes of devastating fires, but the tiny stage seems charmed: Rossini, Bellini and Verdi all premiered major operas here. Tours are possible with advance booking by phone (041 24 24), but the best way to see La Fenice is in full swing with the loggione (opera buffs that pass judgment on productions from on high in the top-tier cheap seats). In the off-season look for symphonies and chamber music concerts at La Fenice or operas staged at the charming, diminutive 17th-century Teatro Malibran.
