Lonely Planet review

The Glass Museum has some exquisite pieces. The building, set in a peaceful garden, is a grand 15th-century affair that from 1659 until the early 19th century was the seat of the Torcello bishopric (until its dissolution) and then became Murano town hall. The museum was installed here in 1861, mostly on the 1st floor.

On the ground floor is a display of ancient glass artefacts, mostly unearthed in tombs in Dalmatia and dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries (the art of glass-blowing had taken off in Palestine in the 1st century BC). Upstairs you can turn right into a room where glass-making is explained. At the left is the frescoed Salone Maggiore (Grand Salon), with a display of all sorts of exquisite pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries.
