Introducing Sestiere di San Marco
Guests at the Gritti Palace on the Grand Canal don't have to leave their balconies to go sightseeing: this landmark 1525 doge’s palace reopened in 2013 after an extensive year-long restoration, from Rubelli silk damask lining top-floor suites and landmark Grand Canal rooms to underfloor heating beneath terrazzo marble floors in the Gritti Epicurean School and restaurant. Classic Venetian Rooms have also been touched up gently, with restored antique fainting couches, stucco ceilings, hand-painted vanities, and bathrooms sheathed in rare marble. Rooms and suites facing north and west toward Campo Santa Maria del Giglio lack Grand Canal views and southern light, but the level of luxury is consistent. Luxury hotel specialist Starwood manages operations to international standards, and chef Daniele Turco creates inspired Venetian trade-route cuisine for fabulous dockside meals.
