The Biennale jet set seeks out this vine-covered corte sconta (hidden courtyard) for imaginative housemade pasta and ultrafresh, visually striking seafood. Crustaceans are arranged on a platter like dabs of paint on an artist’s palette, black squid-ink pasta is artfully topped with bright orange squash and tender cappesante (scallops) sticking out their red feet, and roast eel loops like the River Brenta on the plate with a drizzle of balsamic reduction.

    My first real meal after travelling for almost 19 hours was at Cortesconta Candiani, located at Piazzale Candiani 17, in Mestre, just 14 km outside of Venice.

    I enjoyed a primo piatto of pomodori & formaggio. Then I had a seafood risotto with some house red wine to wash it down.

    It was very simple, cheap, it did hit the spot although not the best food I have had in an Italian restaurant! Let's say that it was reasonnably priced for what I ate.

    It was set in a nice casual yet slightly romantic outdoor patio, with simple settings and candle light.

    There is also the option of going inside, where it is more bar-like ambiance, while still serving the same satisfying meals.

    The service was a little slow, but maybe it was because I was so hungry that I could not wait anymore for anything... Or is it because you definately have to speak up and loud to grab the attention of the waiters?!! And I have to say that the terrasse was full and there was actually a line-up at the door! It normally is a good sign... or is it?
