Lonely Planet review for Osteria Mocenigo

A young and enthusiastic team serves you in this smallish but welcoming Venetian eatery. Exposed timber beams and burnt brown floor tiles give the place a sense of warmth, but it is unmistakeably fresh and modern - no attempt at recreating ye olde Venice here. Try the insalata di piovra (octopus salad, around €12).

Only good food we had in Venice...

    bethelisspecial recommends this,

We were very disappointed in the "Venetian cuisine" we had been paying out the nose for during our stay. We stumbled on this place and liked it so much we went back a second time. It has a very pleasant atmosphere with low aged wood beams and lots of local wines. It was easy to find--just get off at the San Stae vaporetto stop (line 1) and walk straight down the alley off the dock (if you are facing the church it is the alley to the right and is a straight shot less than a block away on the right side if you are walking away from the vaporetto). Food was the most reasonably priced and by far the most tasty we had during our stay. We even put in requests and they were happy to oblige (in a loud very Italian way). Rare lamb, no problem. Spaghetti with oil and garlic, no problem. Primi after we ate secundos, no problem.

We visited during Aqua Alta (in December) and the alley was high enough to be dry when EVERYTHING near the grand canal seemed to be under water.

During our first trip we sat and watched the them teaching a kid (maybe the son) how to make the desserts through the kitchen door which was left open. We also very much enjoyed that we could get something OTHER than the nasty overly fishy seafood we were encountering elsewhere (Venetians apparently like to eat what we in Alaska use as bait).

I had grilled rare lamb (simple, garlicky and divine) and my hubby had chicken. The secundo platter came with micro green salad and potatoes. Recommended 1/2 liter of wine was the best we had in 6 days and was 7 euros for a 1/2 liter.

    Very highly recommended!!
