Lonely Planet review
Eighteenth-century Venetian doges (dukes) in their matching red hats and cloaks would blend into the decor here: every room is swathed in deep red and damask, from the bedspreads and upholstery to the walls and curtains. With such an alluring, courtly setting, the scene is set for romantic intrigue.
A history lesson comes free with your stay at this house, built by a 13-century doge of Venice for foreign merchants visiting the Rialto Market. Ambassadors from Friuli and other eminent guests visited in the 15th century, and from the 18th century it served as a private home before opening as a hotel in the 1950s. Ascend steep stairs to your guestroom, and if you booked ahead for rooms 1 or 2 you can flop down in a sizable room with a view of the Grand Canal. If not, don't despair: the breakfast room overlooks the canal, and a webcam in every bedroom thoughtfully provides real-time views of the scenic waterway. Room 10 in the attic is snug verging on claustrophobic, and double room 11 has an adjoining single room to accommodate families.
Our independent authors have visited Antica Locanda Sturion and selected this as one of our recommended hotels in Sestiere di San Polo & Santa Croce (Santa Crose).
