Lonely Planet review for Il Gufo
The owner/chef gathers ingredients from local markets and cooks up whatever is fresh and in season. Try dishes such as cinghiale (wild boar) with fennel (€12.50) or riso nero (black rice) with grilled vegetables and brie (€12.50). There is always a good selection of salads for €5. Note: no credit cards.

A hidden gem... seriously, good luck finding it.
allenar recommends this,
We spent nearly an hour wandering the roller-coaster streets of Perugia, stopping every fifty yards to ask directions from strangers- directions which consisted of much arm-flailing, demonstrative pointing, and many a si-si-per-voi-bellissima (whatever that means). Everyone in Perugia knew where Via della Viola was, but none of them spoke English.
We were near despair when we finally stumbled upon it, a furtive sign hung on a menacing thicket up a narrow, winding cobblestone street inhabited by stray dogs and a drunken Umbrian ranting passionately to no one.
Sketchy.
But we'd come this far, so we poked around until we found a way through the hedge. Feeling a bit like really unstealthy intruders, we tiptoed onto a candlelit terrace. The place was deserted, silent, and ethereal. Despite the constant proselytizing and occasional dogfight still audible through the leafy facade, I felt transported.
A young woman appeared to steer us to a table under the emerging stars. She spoke about six words of English. But she smiled politely as we pantomimed our orders, had an uncanny knack for appearing exactly when we needed water or a new spoon, and didn't even flinch when we told her we wouldn't be needing wine.
There was something for everyone. For my mother, the everything-allergic health nut, black rice and grilled vegetables. My father, the frenzied carnivore, couldn't wait to ravage the wild boar. I, never impressed when a restaurant can satisfy me with something I already know I love, ordered eggplant ravioli- a dish with my least favorite food as its main ingredient. Within a few bites we were all convinced that we had ordered the best dish on the menu.
I was the only one intrepid enough to order dessert. Despite having to actually grow a second stomach just to fit it in, the panna cotta was well worth the effort.
All this set us back about 50 euros. We left feeling heavy, happy, and once again completely lost.
In conclusion: by all means go, but bring a map.Good for: atmosphere, food, Solo Travellers, service
