There are no shortages of highlights on this classic section of the pilgrimage route between Canterbury and Rome. From the delightful city of Florence with its artistic treasures and incredible beauty, a short transfer by train takes walkers to the start of the trail at San Miniato. Scenes of rolling hills, fortified towns and fields of sunflowers unfold as the trail meanders through woodlands and vineyards. At night stay in inspiring locations such as San Gimignano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy with its dominating towers and the walled town of Monteriggioni. Accommodation is in a mix of charming hotels and B&B's which offer an insight into local culture and cuisine. Finishing the walk in Siena, with its winding alleyways and grand piazza is a fitting endpoint for this section of pilgrimage.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Florence
On arrival in Florence, make your way to your 3 star hotel in the center of Florence. The remainder of the day is free to explore this beautiful city.
Day 2 Explore Florence, afternoon train to San Miniato
Full day at your leisure to visit Florence the city of Leonardo, Giotto, Dante and Brunelleschi, or for those so inclined, Gucci and Salvatore Feragamo! Prebook tickets to the Uffizi Gallery, stroll through the winding streets to view the Palazzo Vecchio, the river Arno and the Ponte Vecchio, climb to the wonderous heights of the Duomo's dome or view the sculptures in the Boboli Gardens - just a few of the must sees in Florence! In the afternoon a 1h train ride will take you at San Miniato, the departure point of the Francigena way, leading to Siena. Dinner at leisure and overnight in San Miniato.
Day 3 Begin walk on the pilgrimage route to Gambassi Terme (6hrs)
From San Miniato the trail starts along a hilly path surrounding the Val d’Elsa rich in castles, tiny hamlets and lonely chapels. Along the road you can visit two interesting churches, Pieve di Coiano and Pieve S. Maria just before arriving in Gambassi. Dinner and Overnight in Gambassi Terme. (6 hours walking, +400 mt -230 mt, 24km)
Day 4 Rolling hills lead the way to the towers of San Gimignano (4hrs)
Leaving Gambassi you are immersed in the peaceful countryside gently dominated by the unmistakable shape of San Gimignano hill with its telltale towers. Declared by the UNESCO World Human Heritage, the city of San Gimignano holds, still intact, its medieval urban architecture. In the afternoon you have time to visit the town and admire the spectacular view from one of the towers. Dinner and overnight in San Gimignano. (4 hours walking, +340 mt -330 mt, 14km)
Day 5 Walk to the glass producing town of Colle Val D'Elsa (4hrs)
Rolling hills typify the countryside as you continue in the direction of Colle Vald’Elsa, an interesting town located in the heart of Tuscany, in a strategic position, close to the cities of Siena, Florence and Volterra. The main activity of Colle val D'Elsa, described as "the Bohemia of Italy", is marked by the manufacture of glass and the production of lead-crystal glass. Dinner and overnight stay in Colle val d’Elsa. (4 hours walking, +370 mt -310 mt, 13km)
Day 6 A walk through the Chianti vineyards to Monteriggioni (4hrs)
From Colle val d’Elsa the route continues along a lovely path surrounded by Chianti vineyards and olive groves and passing by a small Roman water reservoir. The way is fairly flat until you reach the base of Monteriggioni, one of the most classical and best known Italian walled town. The walls, nearly intact, cover a length of 570 meters and are alternated by 14 towers and two gates. Dinner and overnight stay in Monteriggioni. (4 hours walking, +290 mt -320 mt, 14km)
Day 7 The final stage through classic Tuscan scenes to Siena (5hrs)
From Monteriggioni, follow a route through classic countryside to Siena. Siena is characterized by a quaint landscape, the city unrolls in a continuous up and down of streets, where you can discover the white and dark green marble decorated Dome, the Baptistery and the Museum of Metropolitan Opera, or you can simply enjoy the harmonious town square of Piazza del Campo.
