A walking trip to explore Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, the island of Capri and the stunning Amalfi Coast

There are few trips which take in such a diverse combination of highlights. From the spectacular Amalfi coast to the fascinating ruins of Pompeii, to the historic centre of Naples and the beautiful island of Capri, this walking trip offers the very best of this captivating region. From your base in Naples the relaxed schedule offers opportunities to visit the island of Capri and the ruins of Pompeii before the next stage of the trip. After ascending to the crater of Mt Vesuvius, a private transfer takes you to the small town of Agerola perched high above the sea. Surrounded by forests and with sweeping views of the Mediterranean, Agerola is a perfect base to explore the Amalfi Coast on foot. Day walks along a series of ancient footpaths lead you to the stunning bougainvillea covered town of Positano, past terraced vineyards to the timeless villages of Ravello and Pogerola and across rugged hillsides to the beautiful Ferriere Valley. In between walks, relax to enjoy fine hospitality, a dip in the sea and delicious local cuisine.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Naples

Arrive in Naples and make your way to the hotel, located in the city centre. Founded by the Greeks more than 2800 years ago when it was named Neápolis (or new city), the city has a rich and colourful history. The old centre is UNESCO world heritage listed due to its abundance of architectural features including historic castles, grand piazzas and cathedrals. There are some excellent museums and one not to be missed is the Naples National Archeological Museum which boasts the most impressive collection of Roman artifacts in the world. Naples is the home of pizza and the mandolin, and the gastronomic and musical traditions continue to thrive in its restaurants and music venues. After checking into your hotel, the day is free to explore. We provide suggestions on places to eat and things to see in our detailed notes.

Day 2 Hydrofoil to island of Capri, explore (3hrs), return to Naples

This morning you take the hydrofoil to the island of Capri (40 min). Visit to the Matromania caves and to the “Terrazza di Tragara” along a colourful path with villas and gardens full of flowers. Great view over the “Faraglioni” and “Monte Solaro”. There is time to enjoy swimming in the sea and to discover the romantic alleys of Capri village. In the afternoon hydrofoil back to Naples. 3 hours walking, ascent +300m, descent -300m

Day 3 Pompeii by train, afternoon free in historical centre of Naples

Transfer by train to Pompeii (1hr) and visit the incredible sleeping Roman town where you can walk at your own pace, enjoying this important and charming historical site. In the afternoon, take the train back to Naples and there will be free time to discover the historical city centre with its narrow alleys, “Spacca Napoli” district, Via Toledo, the Umberto I Gallery and Plebiscite square.

Day 4 Transfer to Mt Vesuvius, walk to crater, continue to Agerola (2hrs)

This morning is dedicated to the discovery of Mt Vesuvius and all its dimensions: geological, volcanic and natural. The day begins with a transfer by bus to the base, followed by an easy walk to ascend to the crater of Mt Vesuvius at 1280m. There is a wonderful view across to Naples Bay. Later, a private transfer will take you to the hotel located in Agerola. Dinner and overnight in Agerola. 2 hours walking, ascent +200m, descent -200m

Day 5 Traverse the Lattari Mountains (5hrs), return to Agerola

Today involves a walk to the edge of Lattari Mountains. During the walk there are magnificent views over the Amalfi coast. From Agerola you take a trail to the village of Pogerola and continue to the village of Amalfi. A public bus takes you back to Agerola (approx 35 minutes). Dinner and overnight in Agerola. 5 hours walking, ascent +100m, descent -750m

Day 6 Walk through Ferriere Valley to Ravello, return to Agerola (5hrs)

Beginning in the village of Amalfi, you hike along the beautiful Ferriere Valley, which is the ancient “Amalfi industrial area”, where paper mills and iron-works were situated, which ultimately gave its name to the whole area. We reach Ravello, located at 350m above sea level. There is free time to discover this village and an optional visit to “Villa Cimbrone” and “Villa Rufolo”. The walk concludes in Amalfi after passing through the village of Atrani. Public bus back to Agerola. Dinner and overnight in Agerola. 5 hours walking, ascent +350m, descent -350m

Day 7 Hike mule path from Agerola to Positano (5hrs), boat to Amalfi, local bus to Agerola

Today we take the trail known as the “Walk of the Gods”, between Agerola and Positano. This is an ancient terraced mule path linking Agerola to the village of Positano, a small and charming fishing village. Depending on the conditions of the sea you can return to Amalfi by boat and then transfer by public bus to Agerola. Dinner and overnight in Agerola. 5 hours walking, descent -600m

Day 8 Return to Naples airport, trip concludes

After breakfast there will be a private transfer (1.5hrs) back to Naples airport where the trip concludes.

  • 7 breakfasts, 4 dinners (Agerola) - Breakfasts are usually continental inclusive of breads, tea, coffee & juices. Dinner will consist of 3 courses, usually starting with a salad, followed by a chicken, red meat, fish or pasta dish & finishing with a dessert of fruit or cakes.
