Explore the best of southern Italy from Naples to Sicily on this inspiring walking tour. From the wonder of Pompeii to the summit of Mount Vesuvius, the stunning Amalfi coastline with its network of trails linking picturesque villages and the bustling city of Naples, the first part of the journey is brimming with highlights. Continuing the volcano trail to the Aeolian Islands, relaxing moments on stark black beaches combine with exhilarating ascents to the active craters of Volcano and Stromboli, whose dramatic eruptions will not fail to impress. Concluding the trip at one of the worlds most famous active volcanoes, Mt Etna where the evidence of past eruptions is clearly evident in the unusual landscape on its flanks, there is time to explore the delightful seaside town of Taormina with its ancient Greek theatre and typical Sicilian atmosphere. Throughout the trip there is ample opportunity to sample the delicious local cuisine and explore the narrow streets of ancient towns at your leisure.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Naples
On arrival at Naples airport, make your way to the hotel, located in the city centre. Founded by the Greeks more than 2800 years ago when it was named Neápolis (or new city), the city has a rich and colourful history. The old centre is UNESCO World Heritage listed due to its abundance of architectural features including historic castles, grand piazzas and cathedrals. Overnight in Naples.
Day 2 Day trip to Capri (3hrs)
This morning you take the hydrofoil to the island of Capri (40min). Visit to the Matromania caves and to the Terrazza di Tragara along a colourful path with villas and gardens full of flowers. Great views of the Faraglioni (spurs of rock which rise up out of the sea) and Monte Solaro. There is time to enjoy swimming in the sea and to discover the romantic alleys of Capri village. In the afternoon take the hydrofoil back to Naples. Overnight in Naples. +300m, -300m
Day 3 Transfer to Agerola above the Amalfi Coast
The morning is free to explore Naples, the historical city centre with its narrow alleys, “Spacca Napoli” district, Via Toledo, the Umberto I Gallery and Plebiscite square. We provide suggestions on places to eat and things to see in our detailed notes. In the afternoon there will be a private transfer to Agerola, a small village overlooking the Amalfi coast. Dinner and overnight in Agerola.
Day 4 Walk to Ravello and Amalfi (5hrs)
Today involves a walk to the edge of the Lattari Mountains and offers magnificent views of the Amalfi coast. From Agerola we take a trail to the village of Pogerola and continue until Ravello, located at 350m above sea level. There is free time to discover this lovely village and an optional visit to “Villa Cimbrone” and “Villa Rufolo”. Public bus back to Agerola. Dinner and overnight in Agerola. +300m, -300m
Day 5 Traverse an ancient terraced mule path to Positano (4hrs)
A beautiful day of walking along the “Path of the Gods”, originally a mule track used by farmers cultivating the area until the Second World War, with spectacular views of the coast and Capri. Positano is a lovely village with a nice sandy beach, ideal for swimming after the walk. Depending on the conditions of the sea, you can return to Amalfi by boat and then transfer by public bus to Agerola. Dinner and overnight in Agerola. +100m, -750m
Day 6 Transfer to Pompeii, ascend Mt Vesuvius, ferry to Stromboli (2hrs)
In the morning, transfer by public bus to Pompeii and take your time to visit this incredible archaeological site. At 2pm there will be a private transfer to Mt Vesuvius followed by an easy walk to the top (1280m) to discover its geological and volcanic aspects. There is also a wonderful view of the bay of Naples. Another transfer takes you to Naples harbour where you embark on a night ferry to Stromboli. Overnight stay in double ensuite cabin. +100m, -100m
Day 7 Morning relaxation, afternoon hike to the "Sciara del Fuoco" (4hrs)
Morning arrival at Stromboli where we check in at the hotel and relax on one of Stromboli’s unique black beaches. In the late afternoon there is a great walk to the “Sciara del Fuoco” (around 400m) where you first experience the incredible activity of Stromboli, usually occurring every 15 minutes, and take in the wonderful panoramic view of the craters and the immense path created by rock fall. Overnight stay in Stromboli. +400m, -400m
Day 8 Morning free, late afternoon volcano ascent with certified guide*(6hrs)
In the morning there is free time to visit the lovely village of San Vincenzo and the interesting volcanology centre on the island. You may also like to take a boat tour of the island to visit the small village of Ginostra, which is on the opposite side of the island and only accessible by boat. In the late afternoon there is a planned ascent of the volcano* with a certified volcano guide. You arrive after sunset to see the full impact of the short eruptions that occur regularly. Return to the hotel afterwards for overnight in Stromboli. +924m, -924m *The volcano is 920m high and group sizes for the climb are a maximum of 20 people, escorted by a certified volcanic guide, in accordance with Italian law. You will walk with a group of 20 (max) and the guides speak English together with German, French and Italian. The volcano guides reserve the right to not climb the volcano according to safety measures that are constantly being monitored, the weather and also the physical condition of the walkers. If you are considered not fit enough to ascend you will be asked to descend.
Day 9 To Lipari, hike to the southernmost point of the island (3hrs)
This morning you take a hydrofoil to Lipari (1hr). After check-in at the hotel, hike to Punta Caprazza, Lipari’s southernmost point, for wonderful views over Vulcano’s crater. Dinner and overnight in Lipari. +100m,-100m
Day 10 To Vulcano, ascend to crater (3hrs)
In the morning a short boat trip takes you to Vulcano (10 min), one of the seven Aeolian Islands and famous for its black beaches and thermal springs. An easy ascent of Vulcano’s crater to see the “fumaroles” along a well defined trail. Descend for a swim at the beach or perhaps a mud bath. Return to Lipari by hydrofoil for dinner and overnight stay. +390m, -390m
Day 11 Transfer to Mt Etna, afternoon walk (1.5hr)
This morning another hydrofoil takes you to Milazzo harbour on Sicily’s mainland (1hr) where you will be met and transferred to the southern side of Mt Etna (1900m). After settling into the hotel, take a short walk over the track called Crateri Silvestri for a first glimpse of the extraordinary volcanic activity on Mt Etna. Dinner and overnight in Etna. +100m, -100m
Day 12 Discover the craters and viewpoints on Mt Etna up to 2900m (6hrs)
Its possible to ascend to 2900m on the mountain without a guide. A series of trails takes you high on the mountain with superb distant views to the coast and sea together with the past craters dotting the valley. In particular you can see the line of big craters that opened during the 2002/03 eruption. Return to the hotel, passing along the edge of the “Bove Valley”, a huge “caldera” formed from the collapse of an old volcano. At 5pm there will be a private transfer from Mt Etna to the hotel in Catania. The busy city of Catania is home to many baroque churches and buildings, all placed in the very heart of the city centre. Overnight stay in Catania. +1000m, -1000m *Option: dependent on weather conditions and volcano activity, it may be possible to climb to the summit at the central craters (3350m), guided by a mountain escort with a combination of cable car and 4WD vehicle up to 2900m, then trek to the top. From there you walk back to your hotel (price EUR75 per person, subject to change).
Day 13 Day walk from Taormina to Castelmola (3hrs)
In the morning, take a local bus to the delightful town of Taormina, built on a hill overhanging the sea. After an easy walk from Taormina to Castelmola, known for its almond wine, there will be free time to visit the Greek Theatre and the small lanes of this beautiful town or swim in the blue sea of the natural reserve of Isola Bella. Bus back to Catania for overnight stay. +300m, -300m
Day 14 Trip concludes Catania
