Itinerary
Days 1-2 Venice
Work up an appetite for some delicious cicheti by exploring the narrow streets and tiny bridges of Venice. Take a vaporetto across to the island of San Giorgio Maggiore and climb the bell tower for the most exceptional views of this seductive city. Then, cruise through the matrix of narrow waterways aboard a traditional traghetto.
Day 3 Modena
Travel by train to a city that was home to the late Luciano Pavarotti. Stock up on the region's famous balsamic vinegar at an acetaia, a house where the dressing is made in the attic. While here, be sure to feast on some of Modena's culinary specialities including prosciutto, tortellini and zampone (stuffed pig's trotter). Or, for car-lovers, a visit to the Ferrari Museum and gallery is sure to provide a few high-speed thrills.
Days 4-5 Cinque Terre
Absorb sweeping views of the Mediterranean from the Cinque Terre's picturesque coastal path. Hike at a leisurely pace or catch a train between these five famous towns, passing vineyards, olive groves and buildings awash with pastel colours. In free time, be sure to indulge in a plate of Liguria's legendary pesto or even take to the sea in a kayak.
Days 6-7 Pisa/Florence
After marvelling at the Leaning Tower of Pisa, appreciate artistic treasures in the romantic Tuscan capital. As the sun begins to set, why not walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo to admire Florence from above and see why this city is affectionately known as Italy's 'Outdoor Museum'.
Days 8-9 Perugia/Spello
Venture further afield to the beautifully preserved town of Perugia, in the heart of Umbria. For an insight into local history, why not spend time perusing the National Gallery or Archaeological Museum. Then, set off on a day trip to nearby Spello to sample local wines and food at a quaint enoteca.
Days 10-12 Naples/Sorrento
Look out for pizzerias bearing the words 'la vera pizza napolitana'. Then, grab a hot slice and decide if Naples really does have the world's best pizza. Spend time exploring the incredible remnants of Pompeii on a day tour and perhaps work up a sweat clambering up to the summit of mighty Mt Vesuvius. In free time, enjoy an excursion to Capri or the Amalfi Coast before relaxing amid the stunning environs of Sorrento at night.
Days 13-15 Rome
Arrive in the Italian capital and remember that while here, the best attitude is 'when in Rome'! Perhaps visit the Vatican City to see St Peter's Basilica and dome and enjoy a final gastronomic fling before the journey ends.
