Right at the beginning of Ragusa Ibla, the Locanda Don Serafino is a good splash-out opportunity in Ragusa. Inside a traditional (and recently renovated) stone building, many of the rooms overlook the rushing San Leonardo river.
This traditionally decorated three-star hotel prides itself on its family atmosphere (family photos adorn the website) and its service. The rooms are comfortable, with vaulted ceilings, exposed stone walls, simple wooden furniture and splashes of yellows, reds and blues amid the general whiteness. The added appeal of the Locanda is not only its rooms or river views, but the wonderful fact that the hotel has its own beach at Marina Ragusa, 20km (12.5mi) from here, which can be a real blessing in the hot summer months. There's also a restaurant of the same name, a very popular place in its own right, where you can sample modern Ragusan cuisine and some amazing wines.
