Lonely Planet review for Cacio e Pepe
Romans flock for the home cooking at this humble trattoria, with gingham-clad tables spreading across the pavement in all directions. They’ll even put up with freezing winter temperatures to sit outside and dig into great steaming bowls of cacio e pepe – the this-morning-fresh bucatini slicked with buttery cheese and pepper.

A good alternative
ellypois recommends this,
CACIO E PEPE is a small trattoria that can be a useful alternative to the thousands of bad restaurants around St Peter's. It's a little bit far from it, but anyway it deserves everything.
The local is really small, there are tiny, close-set tables so that you can sit near other people. The place is inside the tipical roman osteria, with checked tablecloth, a lot of photos on the walls; I think it's better to sit outside, anyway, even in winter. In fact the tables on the pavement are a little more comfortable and bigger. There are always long queues to eat here, so it's better to book. The service is really simple: no menu, just a few dishes. The place is famous for his wonderful first courses: pasta alla carbonara (that's spaghetti with guanciale (bacon), eggs and pecorino), pasta alla gricia (guanciale and percorino), pasta cacio e pepe (with black pepper and pecorino). I took a carbonara, and it was the best of my life. The serving are really abundant, so that you can eat even just pasta and you'll be alright! The price are normal, about 9 euros for pasta, bread and water.
No dessert, just fruit, and a really good coffee.
It's the right place to really FEEL the roman cuisine.Good for: atmosphere, food, Families
