Necci
To start your exploration of this bar-studded area, try the iconic Necci, opened in 1924, where film director Pasolini used to hang out, and where he filmed some of Accattone. More recently it appeared in Francesca Archibugi’s Una questione di Cuore. Gutted by fire in 2009, it was swiftly restored to how it was. It caters to an eclectic crowd of all ages, and has a lovely, leafy garden-terrace (ideal for families out for dinner as the kids have some room to play). There’s wi-fi.

Osteria Qui se Magna!
A real neighbourhood secret, this buzzing, gay-friendly osteria (wine bar serving food) serves up cheap, lip-smacking Roman dishes such as pasta all'amatriciana (pasta with tomato, pancetta and chilli-pepper sauce), grilled meats and puntarella (Lazio chicory with anchovies, garlic and a splash of vinegar) to loud'n'merry locals. Book for weekend dining.

Primo
Flagship of the new scene in Pigneto, Primo is the chicest restaurant in the hood. The kitchen mixes creative and classics, the buzz is palpable, and the setting is shabby chic, with pale-grey walls, hexagonal tiled floors and lights dangling on long wires.

Old Bridge
Ideal for a pre- or post-Vatican pick-me-up, this tiny parlour has been cheerfully dishing up huge portions of delicious ice cream for over 20 years. Try the chocolate or pistachio, and, go on, have a dollop of cream.
