    Dolce Maniera

This 24-hour basement bakery supplies much of the neighbourhood with breakfast. Head here for cheap-as-chips cornetti, slabs of pizza, panini and an indulgent array of cakes.

    Bocca di Dama

The ‘Mouth of a Woman’ (named after a traditional almond cake) is a lovely little patisserie/café run by creative types – think cakes as art. Huge windows overlook the street, and you can tuck into divine little cupcakes topped with blueberries or delicate little sugar carrots, or exquisite bonbons with names like bacio dell’architetto (the architect’s kiss).

    Boccione

This tiny, unsigned Jewish bakery on the corner with Piazza Costaguti is where the locals come to buy their special occasion dolci. The burnished cakes are bursting with fruit and sultanas, and specialities include ricotta cake with chocolate flakes and cherries, marzipan amaretto biscuits, and mostacciolo romano (a kind of sweet biscuit) – all served by authentically grumpy elderly ladies.

    La Dolceroma

Bringing the sweet taste of Vienna to the Roman Ghetto, this well-known bakery specialises in delicious strudel and Sacher torte, as well as carrot cake, pumpkin pie (October and November only), pastries, muffins, cookies and splendid ice cream. Everything’s made on the premises.

    Il Gianfornaio

A busy bakery that does a fantastic range of sweet and savoury snacks – think strudels, cornettos (Italian croissants) and thin and crispy pizza slices – as well as pasta and meat dishes to eat at one of the few indoor tables.
