Hotel Capo d'Africa
Lonely Planet review
A short walk up from the Colosseum, this is a chic but refreshingly unpretentious hotel. The look is modern - an eye-catching ensemble of neutral backgrounds, colourful furniture and bold artwork - and rooms are spacious and sunny. There's a charming terrace, a small gym, disabled access and attentive staff.
It's a little way off the beaten tourist track, but the Capo d'Africa is well worth tracking down. It must be one of the capital's best-looking hotels. The entrance, guarded by two towering palm trees, is set in a formal 19th-century façade, and inside, the lobby is a salad of sunlight, purples, browns and maroons. Rooms are stylish, featuring blanched wood decor and crimson leather armchairs and sofas. They vary in size - in a former life they were all classrooms - but by Roman standards are big. Throughout, great care has been taken to incorporate comfort into the grand design, so while beds have polished-wood headpieces they are firm with top quality linen. Bathrooms sport grey marble sinks and soft, fluffy towels. Service is top-notch and the location is quiet. The 2nd floor is completely non-smoking.
