    Ai Tre Scalini

It’s almost obligatory to visit everyone’s favourite enoteca before or after dining at La Carbonara. ‘The Three Steps’ is always packed, with crowds spilling out into the street. Apart from a tasty choice of wines, it also sells the damn fine Menabrea beer, brewed in northern Italy. If you’ve missed out on dinner, you can tuck into a heart-warming array of cheeses, salami, and dishes such as porchetta di Ariccia con patate al forno (roasted Ariccia pork with roast potatoes).

    Il Melograno

A small, snug enoteca, this is run by two knowledgeable brothers who will suggest the best wines from their 300-strong list without making you feel like an ignoramus. There’s a cheap set-dinner menu or you can choose dishes such as bruschettine, crostini and carpacci a la carte. Desserts are homemade, best accompanied by fragrant dessert wines.

    Al Vino al Vino

A studiously rustic, vine-decorated place, mixing ceramic tabletops and contemporary paintings, this is an attractive spot to linger over a fine collection of wines, particularly passiti (sweet wines). The other speciality is distillati – grappa, whisky and so on. And of course there are snacks too, including some Sicilian delicacies.

    Passaguai

A small, cavelike basement winebar, Passaguai has a few outdoor tables on the quiet street, and feels pleasingly off-the-radar. It boasts a good wine list and a range of artisanal beers, and the food – such as cheeses and cold cuts – is tasty too.

The coolest bar on the campo, this has a small, bottle-lined, cosy interior and outside tables as well, and attracts fighi (cool) Romans like bees to a honey pot. A birra media costs €4.50.
