This eclectic former workshop has an underground cellar, an upper floor, a garden and a whimsical door policy. On Tuesdays it's electronica L'Etrika, while it goes hip hop and R&B on Thursday. Expect local live (often cover) bands on Friday, R&B and house on Saturday. Entrance is €15, including a complimentary drink.

Brancaleone
This former centro sociale is now one of Rome’s top clubs. Blockbuster DJs ratch up the tempo, pumping up the young, alternative crowd with house, hip-hop, drum’n’bass, reggae and electronica. Everyone from serious musos to skate kids will be in their element. The club is some distance from the city centre, just off Via Nomentana in the outlying Montesacro district.

La Maison
Chandeliers and long, low banquettes provide a sexy backdrop for a see-and-be-seen crowd, who flirt and frolic to a soundtrack of poppy tunes and commercial house. It’s smooth, mainstream and exclusive, yet more fun than you might expect. Entrance is free, if you can get past the door police, but drinks are about €15 a throw.

Distillerie Clandestine
A club-bar- restaurant that has a 1930s-meets-Blade Runner decor and keeps the punters dancing with a mix of house, dance and hip hop. As well as a restaurant, there’s a ship-shaped American bar lit by a tangle of neon tubes suspended above it.

Piper Club
Keeping Rome in the groove since 1965, Piper has worked through its midlife crisis and is starting to rediscover its mojo as the life and soul of Rome’s clubbing scene. As well as hosting funky party nights, it also stages some great gigs – previous performers have included White Lies, Nitin Sawney, Babyshambles and Pete Yorn.

Esc Atelier Occupato
The ‘occupied studio’ is a squatter-style arts centre, hosting gigs, club nights, exhibitions, political events and more. It also organises Dinamo Fest in July at Città dell’altra Economia, which featured such events as a live set from Richard Dorfmeister in 2011. Admission and drinks are cheap.

L’Alibi
One of Rome’s historic gay clubs, L’Alibi does high-camp with style, putting on kitsch shows and playing sultry, soulful house to a mixed gay and straight crowd. Its spread over three floors and if the sweaty atmosphere in the dance halls gets too much, head up to the huge summer roof terrace. Thursday nights are big with the ever-popular Gloss party.
