Circolo degli Artisti
For the sound of the underground, Circolo is one of Rome’s best nights out, serving up a fine menu of fun: there’s Screamadelica on Saturday nights, with Italy’s alternative music oracle Fabio Luzzietti, while Friday night cracks open the electronica and house for gay night Omogenic. Regular grunge-guitar-electronica gigs see big names: think Glasvegas and Cornershop. The large garden area is ideal for chilling out with a beer from the open-air bar, with a barbecue in summer. Admission is either free or a bargain. On Sunday there’s usually a vintage market, sometimes curated by cutting-edge divas the Hysterics Fashion Network.

Baronato Quattro Bellezze
Tucked away between Via dei Coronari and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Baronato is a quirky little find. Late on Thursday nights, drag-queen owner Dominot likes to treat patrons to a few dazzling Piaf renditions to piano accompaniment. A mainly Tunisian menu will sustain you through your cocktail tipples. Reserve a table for the Piaf show.

Gay Village
In summer, Gay Village takes over a 6.5 hectare site of historic parkland and transforms it into an outdoor entertainment complex with bars, two dance floors, an open-air gym, an exhibition space and an outdoor cinema. There's live music, theatrical performances, film screenings and a whole lot more.

Alien
Pure disco, Alien constantly changes its look to keep up with the newest fads. In its latest apparition it's lounge minimalist - flat maxi-screens on the walls, black leather sofas and satinised steel - and the music is house. Theme nights range from fetish to revival and there are also gay nights.

Garbo
Tucked away in a quiet corner of Trastevere, Garbo is a gay club with a relaxed atmosphere that caters to Italians and visitors of all ages. Officially it's a private club, but visitors are welcomed into the intimate candlelit interior by the jovial Irish owner.

Modò
A black-and-white confection: consider wearing black to fit in. This long narrow bar is a sophisticated, intimate venue, with live music (mainly jazz) followed by DJ sets. It's gay-friendly for a Sunday aperitivo.
